Vinnk's Take: Digital Hardcore music. Love it or hate it. I enjoy it from time to time. Groups like Atari Teenage Riot and the like. This one was recommended to me by a friend and I didn't know what to make of it at first, but it grew on me. Now I would call myself a fan. I linked one of the main singles on the album so give it a listen to see if you are into this kind of music.

Vinnk's Take: So I actually discovered Tomoko Kawase's solo project "Tommy February 6" before her band but once I found "the brilliant green" I have been a fan ever since. A lot less crazy than Tommy but rooted in amazing songs and a rocking band. There Will Be Love There was a huge hit in Japan. Tsumetai Hana (冷たい花) and "I’m in Heaven" are also standout tracks. This album is the best selling of their entire discography and a good place to start your new obsession.

Riot on the Grill is the fourth full-length album by Ellegarden

Vinnk's Take: I knew about Ellegarden since the "Bring your Board" album, but this was the album where they really started getting some sales and mainstream recognition. This album helped them becomes one of Japan most beloved punk/alternative rock bands. It's easy to see why this was a breakout. "Red Hot" is an amazing track and a great start to the album. “Missing” and “Niji” are also really great. It was also during this time that I saw them in concert. They opened with Red Hot. The put on a hack of a show.

Song to Fly is an experimental album by Yoko Kanno (菅野よう子) collaborating with many international artists.

Vinnk's Take: I know Yoko Kanno from Cowboy Bebop and her other anime work. Great stuff, some of the best soundtracks ever. But this album was made by giving her total freedom not tied down to any soundtrack. It's wild, free‑form, imaginative and totally wonderful. It has become on of my favorite of her albums. I linked "Atomic Bird", it's so good. Give it a listen.

TWO-MIX - BPM 143 is the 2nd studio album from Two-Mix.

Vinnk's Take: It is hard to separate Two-Mix from Gundam. This is their first album but it is most well known for having the first Gundam Wing opening "Just Communication". There is nothing wrong with picking up this album for just that track (it is a fantastic song) but please listen to the rest of the album too, there is a lot more great stuff on there.

Vampire Night (ヴァンパイアナイト) is basically House of the Dead but with vampires. In fact it uses the House of the Dead engine. Some over the top gameplay and wonderfully terrible voice acting. So good. You can play it with a standard Duelshock controller but it is more fun with a light gun. Cutscenes are in English, no Japanese needed to play.

Love Psychedelico III is (obviously) the 3rd album by the folk/Psychedelic rock group Love Psychedelico.

Vinnk's Take: Love Psychedelico III is just a super groovy album. The group leaned even harder into the 60s/70s sound to great effect. Just listen to "Everybody needs somebody" and the ballad "Hadaka no Ōsama（裸の王様)". Man.. I'm going to listen to album again right now. Highly recommended.

Signal is the 7th studio album for progressive pop duo PSY・S. The group is made of Masaya Matsuura (who is known for making Parappa the Rapper and Vib Ribbon) and CHAKA (who had a very successful solo career)

Vinnk's Take: This is a transition album. Their early stuff was almost entirely synthesizers and in this album they are experimenting more with live instruments and some analog sounds. Some will disagree but I think they made the transition well. Tracks like "Kisses", "Gimmick" and "Asobi ni Kittene" are some of their best tracks period.

Firework Thrower Kantaro's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō / Kanshaku tamanage Kantarō no Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi (かんしゃく玉投げカン太郎の東海道五十三次) is a classic early Sunsoft action game. The description from Wiki for this game is really good, so I will just paste it here:

"The player controls Kantaro, who must pass through various side-scrolling levels while fending off enemies throwing firework grenades. Some enemies are unaffected by grenades, and can only be killed off by explosions from grenades planted on the ground; some are impervious to all of Kantaro's weapons and must be avoided. Various non-player characters attempt to hinder Kantaro's progress, including a prostitute and a ghost who decrease Kantaro's speed, a thief who steals all items held by Kantaro and a border patrol officer, but various items, including a kanzashi, an ofuda and a katana can allow the player to avoid conflict with these characters. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Girlfriend of Steel (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン鋼鉄のガールフレンド) is an adventure game produced in house by Gainax and features the characters from the crazy popular series Neon Genesis Evangelion. I think wikipedia does a good job of telling the story, so I will just past it here (warning SPOILERS):

Fourteen-year-old Mana Kirishima (voiced by Megumi Hayashibara) is transferred to Shinji Ikari's school, and almost immediately they begin to establish a special relationship. This provokes much jealousy in Asuka, who also suspects that Kirishima is a spy who is trying to get information from Shinji about NERV and the Evas. Rei Ayanami is present but plays a rather background role in the story, though she seems to agree with the suspicions of Asuka. Gradually, a relationship between Mana and Shinji unfolds and they end up going on a date. It turns out, however, that Mana is one of three test pilots for the TRIDENT (alternatively named the "Country Crawler") units, a new competitor to the Evangelions, similar to Jet Alone; thus the name Girlfriend of Steel. Eventually, the TRIDENT goes berserk and the Evas have to destroy it.

The interactivity in most of the game is limited to walking around areas until the next plot event is triggered. However, the one true branch occurs at the end of the game, where the player may choose to focus on Mana, Asuka or Kaji. This choice determines which of the game's three endings are shown.

In the Mana ending, Mana is discovered not to have been killed in the battle. Shinji rescues her and brings her back to his apartment. She showers, emerges wearing only a towel, and teasingly asks Shinji if he would like her to remove it (which she eventually does). In discussion with Misato, however, it is agreed that Mana has to leave Tokyo-3, and she says a teary goodbye to Shinji who has won her heart.

In the Asuka ending, Asuka helps Shinji to get over Mana and the two children grow closer as a result. This ending contains romantic images of Asuka and Shinji together, including a moving scene where Asuka hugs Shinji emotionally.

The third ending with Kaji does not focus on any one character as much as the other endings do. Mana is also discovered not to be killed, and says goodbye, with Shinji replying "I'll be waiting for you".

From wiki: The Super NES version of Tournament Fighters was later released in Japan under the title Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Warriors. There's also some more slight differences: Aska's outfit is more revealing and she has a different win animation (bounce). The turtles sound more like teenagers and their character icons are different. No Japanese needed to play.

Vinnk's Take: Late 80's Anri. A amalgamation of city pop, boogie, disco, and synth‑pop. It kind of came out at the end of the City Pop era and represents a transition to the later music Anri would release. Genki Rockets - Genki Rockets I: Heavenly Star is the debut album by virtual J‑pop/electropop music project Genki Rockets

Vinnk's Take: Genki rockets is a project by Game Designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi (Space Channel 5, Rez, Lumines) and music producer Kenji Tamai. And it is amazing. I first heard Genki Rockets music in Lumines and then in the Japanese version of No More Heroes (I heard some of the music was cut for the US release). It is electronic pop with what we would describe now as a virtual Idol. Even though all vocals were performed by a real and very talented human, there was amazing world building for the singer described as "a fictional 17-year-old girl named Lumi who was the first human born in outer space on the International Space Station". All that aside, the music is fantastic and so are the videos on the DVD. I have linked one below. I love this group, but see for yourself if you dig it.

Resident Evil / Biohazard (バイオハザード) This is the Japanese Saturn version of Biohazard and it is the goriest, version. The US Saturn version was censored and the Playstation versions were not a gory to begin with.

From Wiki:

The Sega Saturn version added an unlockable battle mode in which the player must traverse through a series of rooms from the main game and eliminate all enemies within them with the weapons selected by the player. It features two exclusive enemies not in the main game: a zombie version of Wesker and a gold-colored Tyrant. The player's performance in the battle mode is graded at the end. The Japanese Saturn version is the most gore-laden of all the platforms; after decapitating a crawling zombie with a kick, the head remains on the floor, and Plant 42 can cut the character before the game over screen. The Saturn version also features exclusive enemy monsters, such as a re-skinned breed of Hunters known as Ticks and a second Tyrant prior to the game's final battle. Exclusive outfits for Jill and Chris were added as well.

The text in the game is in Japanese but if you are at all familiar with the game, you should be fine. Cut senes are in English with Japanese subtitles.

Vinnk's Take: As I write this in 2025 I am still sad that the Pillows broke up this year. 30 years was a great run for a rock band. I am so happy that I got to the them in concert once but had I known, I would have tried the see them again before this year... Anyway, back to the album, this is a great one (like all their albums). Puyo Puyo 2 / Puyo Puyo Tsuu (ぷよぷよ通) is the Mega Drive version of one of my favorite puzzle games of all time. Many enhancements over the first game but same cute but brutal gameplay. Unlike the first Mega Drive Puyo Puyo game which got an international port as "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine", this 2nd MD Puyo game was not released outside of Japan. Can be played without knowing Japanese.

Vinnk's Take: The Pillows consistently puts out good music. A lot of the later albums get ignored because of not having connections to FLCL but overlooking them is a mistake. If you can get over the juvenile name of this album, you will find a lot to like.

Vinnk's Take: This album was billed as a 20th anniversary album at the time. When a lot of Japanese groups break up before reaching 5 years, this is pretty amazing. Vinnk's Take: My daughter, who is a big fan of this band says this EP is connected to the album "World World World". I am sure she is right but I have always listed to it as a really great stand alone CD. Mustang is a great track as is "Science Fiction". But since the album is so short I usually just listen to the entire thing with no skips.

Vinnk's Take: I am not as familiar with Perfume's albums beyond Level3 so I actually listened to this for the first time while making this listing. I enjoyed it! "Flash" is probably my favorite track and I also enjoyed "Cling Cling" and "Star Train". I'll give it another listen and maybe update this later but I can tell that if you like Perfume in general you will enjoy this, and the packaging of this box set is awesome.

Vinnk's Take: "Mirai no Museum" is my most listened to Perfume song. That's because it was the theme to the Doraemon Movie " Nobita no Himitsu Dougu Museum" and it was played on TV everyday after the Doraemon episodes to promote the movie. My young kids (and I) love Doraemon so it was in heavy rotation. Not a bad song to be an earworm though. Beyond that hit are "Party Maker". "Enter the Sphere" and "1mm" that are also great tracks.

Early Times ~ The Best Of Love Psychedelico is their first Greatest Hits compilation

Vinnk's Take: You want this album. I mean I guess I don't know that for sure.. but this is an album I recommend to anyone who wants a J-pop recommendation. Combines the best of their first 2 albums and 2 songs (Fantastic World and Everyone, Everyone) new to this album. So even if you already have the first 2 albums, you might want to get it, plus the packaging is so neat. Since this is the limited edition, each CD has a unique number so no one else will have one exactly like yours. "Fantastic World" is one of my favorite songs ever and I even had it played at my wedding. Not sure how I can recommend this album more.

Denshu de Go! (電車でGO!) is the first home version of the massively successful Japanese rail sim. This first game only has 4 train lines.

Sagano Line (San’in Main Line) – Kameoka → Kyoto
Keihin–Tōhoku Line – Shinagawa → Yokohama
Tōkaidō Main Line (JR Kyoto Line) – Kyoto → Osaka
Yamanote Line (Inner Loop) – Shibuya → Tokyo

but quite a few trains to choose from and I would argue that the game still holds up really well and is fun to play. You can play with a standard controller or the Denshu de Go controller.

Vinnk's Take: I know I should hate this. ...but I don't. This is basically a manufactured pop group made of the winners of a reality show. The idea was to make a K-pop group with Japanese singers. And it really has those k-pop sensibilities. My daughter was into this group. She would watch the videos on the living room TV and I decided I hated it. ..until I didn't. I can't help it. The songs are catchy as heck and full of energy. "Make you happy" well.. it makes me happy. "Poppin’ Shakin’" and "Take a picture" are also earworms. Don't fight it. Give in to NiziU.
